The Journey of Writing a Poem ft. Synecdoche

Random Thought Process:

Sometimes in life you meet this special someone, with whom it just clicks. You're happy with them; you fall in love with them; you dream of a life with them. Now if you're lucky, you've found your soulmate and you'll live together, happily ever after. But sometimes, people change with time and turn out to be totally different versions of what they were. Their pretentious masks fall off and now you no longer recognize them. Break ups are hard anyway, but this is a little harder. You do eventually move on, but can you completely move away, leaving it all behind? Every strong relationship you share with someone, influences you, changes a part of you to be like them, and that stays like a memory forever.

The First Draft:

I first saw myself in you,
and felt a connection I feel with a few.
But you changed, as time flew,
and then I saw the real you.
The image you showed me first wasn't true.
You weren't the person I thought I knew.
I left when no more feelings or favors were due.
I eventually learnt to live without you.
But things had changed for me too;
for people say, in me they now see a part of you.

The Title:

Synecdoche | syn-ec-do-che
(n.) a figure of speech in which a part of something is used to represent the whole, or the whole represents a part.

The Final Poem:

Synecdoche
At first, I saw myself in you.
I felt a connect I feel for a few.
I saw you change, as time flew,
and realized this was the real you.
The image you portrayed at first wasn't true.
You were no longer the person I thought I knew.
I left with no feelings nor favors due;
eventually learning to live without you.
Alas! by then things had changed for me too -
for people say, now in me they see, a part of you.
